![]() The Benaras school of music traces its ancestry to the chanting of Vedic mantras which heralded the dawn of Indian song and dance. The Guru-Shishya Parampara (teacher-student tradition) in which the teacher trains the disciples in the style and skills evolved over the ages, has sustained the tradition of performing arts in the city. Some of India's most celebrated musicians, who have kept alive this tradition and won national and international acclaim are the classical singers- Behram Khan, Ramchandra Gopal Bhave, Lakshmiprasad Misir, Onkarnath Thakur, Shivsevak Mishra, Girija Devi and Siddeshwari Devi.
